Companion to framing-informal-business-model-ecosystem.md. Two things: (1) the
honest test of the "no work exists" gap claim (Pass 5), and (2) how to ground the
4-Layer framework theoretically and empirically, and how to justify it in the
thesis. Metadata note: years are OpenAlex (online-first possible); confirm at

The claim was: *"No work reads the township informal economy at the business-model
level as a linked system."* Tested with 12 targeted strands (260 unique). Verdict:
the claim holds only if sharpened — the search found close neighbours that a
thesis must acknowledge and distinguish itself from:

The sharpened, honest claim:
Single-venture business-model studies of informal and BoP actors exist (mobile
money agents, embedded/BoP BM frameworks), and ecosystem-level studies of SA
township entrepreneurs exist (stakeholder ecosystems). **None reads the SA
township informal economy at the business-model level as a linked system of
interdependent business models** — the vendor and its distributors, the spaza and
its wholesalers, the chains and their gatekeepers as one analysable structure.
This version is stronger: it shows the search was done, names the neighbours, and
isolates exactly the empty cell. The thesis's conceptual-grounding chapter should
present this table.
A field-built map of the township economy as a behavioural-spatial-relational
system, with four layers:

Why it fits the thesis: it is the structural layer. The business-model lens
describes each node's venture (the vendor's BM, the distributor's BM); ecosystem
theory describes the links; the 4-Layer describes where and how the links happen
and who controls them. Your vendor example maps cleanly: vendor (Layer 1, own
BM) ← produce distributor (Layer 2, own BM) ← water distributor (Layer 2, own BM),
with Layer 3 gatekeepers validating each link and Layer 4 deciding which formal
capital ever reaches the chain.
Each layer should be anchored to established constructs so it is a defensible
synthesis, not an unexplained proprietary model:

The analytical spine: ecosystem theory (Jacobides, Cennamo & Gawer 2018;
Adner 2017) gives the vocabulary for interdependence — the 4-Layer is presented as
the township-specific structure within which interdependent business models link.
Framing the 4-Layer as "the ecosystem structure of the township informal economy"
connects your field-built map to a recognised theoretical stream.

Any framework in a thesis must be justified. For the 4-Layer there are two
legitimate routes, and you can combine them:
1. As an original contribution. Present the 4-Layer as your framework, built
transparently from fieldwork plus prior theory, and validated against a case.
The thesis then contributes a framework, which is a standard and strong outcome.
2. As a literature-grounded synthesis. Show each layer corresponds to an
established construct (above table), so the 4-Layer is a defensible re-organisation
of known theory for the township context, not a private invention.
Whichever you lead with, the thesis must do four things (this IS the justification):
1. Define the framework precisely.
2. Show provenance — where it came from (field evidence + which literature).
3. Show analytical value — what it explains that alternatives cannot.
4. Acknowledge limits — where it does not apply and what it does not claim.
Done this way, the 4-Layer becomes a recognised contribution rather than something
you must apologise for. The justification is not a burden; it is the framework
chapter of your thesis.
1. Screen the Pass 5 neighbours into the review matrix and write the sharpened gap
statement with the table above.
2. Draft the 4-Layer → literature anchoring table into a cheatsheet for the
conceptual-grounding chapter.
3. Pilot the end-to-end mapping of one township chain to give the framework its
empirical anchor.
